Track measurement

The development of rail transport is both an extensive and important focus area. Scan Survey ensures correct positioning for track geometry, technical infrastructure and surrounding terrain and buildings – both when developing new and maintaining existing tracks. Data is captured through the use of a GEDO trolley system.

Accurate railway measurements are crucial for track work and to perform track surveying. We at Scan Survey have specialized expertise in track measurement, and the first thing we do is to establish and quality-assure a good benchmark network. For example, there are typically benchmarks with distances of 50 to 100 meters along railway tracks. If these are calculated incorrectly, the track in the area will be placed incorrectly.

Only when the quality of these necessary reference points is assured will we begin measuring details in the track itself and in the surrounding area. Precision down to the millimeter is needed when it comes to railroad tracks, trams, or subways.

Various types of measurements and tools

For straight stretches, it is important to avoid twisting or height difference between the rails, while in curves there should be a certain height – ie one track should be slightly higher than the other. This ensures that smooth-moving vehicles can maintain the correct speed and comfort for travelers. Precise tools are required to ensure that the geometry is correct.

At the same time, one must have control over the track’s surroundings. It is important to ensure that the track can be operated safely and efficiently, that poles with overlays and electricity are at the right height, that signs are placed correctly and at the right distances, and that signal systems are placed where they should be. Dimensions of foundations, and the distance to structures and objects below and adjacent to the railway, must also be accurately measured.

To see to all the necessary considerations within track measurement, we at Scan Survey have built up both expertise and equipment specifically for this purpose. As an example, we have mapped large parts of the Oslo subway network using our mobile mapping laser rig mounted on a subway train. We have a special trolley that provides better than millimeter precision on all aforementioned parameters, as well as much more. The trolley has been adapted to all types of tracks.

Basis for precise calculations

Whether we use classic surveyors or our most advanced tools for full 3D mapping of the track area, we make sure to put precision first. Extensive experience means that we can quickly obtain high quality measurement data. This data in turn provides the basis for accurate calculations that benefit the customer.

When laying new tracks it is important to follow each stage and give continuous feedback. This ensures, for example, that new railway sleepers end at the right height. We measure continuously and have direct dialogue with the contractor about any adjustments that may need to be made.

Our customers in track measurement are typically consulting engineers, contractors and BaneNOR. We provide import-ready data in all formats, and can quickly adjust to meet new types of needs. We can of course also supply raw data directly.
